Sunset Over Lake Travis on the Summer Solstice
June 20th, 2017
The sunset on the summer solstice was amazing this year. The word Solstice is from Latin Solstitium, from sol(sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the sun appears to stop at this time. The Sun is now higher in the sky throughout the day, and it's rays strike the Earth at a more direct angle, causing the efficient warming of summer.
This year the June solstice fell on two different days: Wednesday, the 21st, for those Eastern Standard Time, and Tuesday, the 20th, for time zones further west!
